Specifics about the Netting TrashTrap® product line

Q. What is a Netting TrashTrap®?

A. A system to capture and remove floatables from CSO, stormwater, or industrial plant discharges using the passive energy of the flow to trap floatables in disposable mesh nets.

Q. How do I determine which model - In-Line, Floating, or End-of-Pipe – is the best solution for a particular outfall?

A. The model and size of the NTT are determined by the characteristics of the specific outfall. For selection and sizing criteria, refer to "Netting TrashTrap® Floatables Collection Systems", Fresh Creek Technologies, 1997 or contact the FCT Applications Engineering Department.

End-of-Pipe systems which retrofit the Netting TrashTrap® system into the existing outfall structure usually provide the lowest installed cost. The Floating system is applicable where there is sufficient water depth for the system to float (minimum of two feet at low tide), where it will not interfere with use of the waterbody (navigable channels, etc.), and where there are not site specific issues which preclude this type of structure (aesthetics, public use, etc.). These systems should not be placed where they will be exposed to extreme wave action, unusually high currents or be exposed to damage by other means such as ice flows, ship traffic, large floating debris, etc. Many CSO outfalls are sheltered at the head end of embayments or coves and have sufficient water depth for these units making them ideal for this configuration.

The In-Line system is undergound and out of sight, particularly well suited for densely populated locations.

Q. Is the Netting TrashTrap® patented?

A. Yes. An initial patent for "Apparatus for Trapping, Signaling Presence of, and Collecting Debris in Waterways" was granted by the U.S. Patent Office in 1996. Other patent applications are in process.

Q. What is the material and strength of the nets?

A. The disposable mesh nets are a knotless knitted synthetic material with a minimum bar strength of 75 pounds. The knitted material holds its shape, does not separate, and is stronger than woven material. Heavier duty materials and a range of apertures are also available for more severe conditions. A range of bag sizes and shapes are available to meet specific requirements. The frames that form the mouth of the bag are made of wood.

Q. What is the expected useful life of the unit?

A. The system is designed and manufactured to have a life expectancy of at least 20 years. It has no moving parts or power requirements.

Q. What is the cost of a typical Netting TrashTrap® unit?

A. All pricing is on a case by case basis. Costs vary with model, size, and site-specific factors. Generally the capital costs of Netting TrashTrap® technology is considerably less than other floatables control solutions as demonstrated by several technical and economic studies done by Consulting Engineers. Fresh Creek Technologies will be pleased to provide copies of these studies.

Q. What is the delivery lead time and installation time for a Netting TrashTrap® unit?

A. Cycle time to implement the systems (receipt of order to commissioning), generally ranges from 40 to 60 days. If a poured-in-place concrete structure is required, the time may be somewhat longer. These times do not include approval of plans or any delays which might result from obtaining permits; however, for the In Line and retrofit End of Pipe models, the permit requirements may be minimal or may not be required at all.

Q. How many Netting TrashTrap® units are currently installed and where are they?

A. Fresh Creek has systems installed in over a dozen states and the District of Columbia. Contact us for a complete list of installations and references.
